Hair Loss Medication - Minoxidil
As we all know by now, there is no single cure-all product for hair loss. The innovative way of treating hair loss is to use combination of medication, topical lotions and laser therapy to achieve the best hair restoration results in the shortest amount of time.
We have had a number of people ask about the medication used in hair regrowth, so thought we would dedicate a post to the subject of one of the main hair loss medications that are used. Please remember, as with any drug, please seek the advice of your doctor before using.
Minoxidil
Originally Minoxidil was developed to treat high blood pressure, and it was noticed that it also caused hair to regrow. Since those early days, Minoxidil has become the first drug to be approved by the American FDA for the purpose of treating androgenetic alopecia (Male Pattern Baldness / Female Pattern Baldness).
How does Minoxidil work?
Minoxidil stimulates hair growth in men and women experiencing pattern baldness. However the full breakdown of how it works exactly is not completely documented.
Is Topical Minoxidil safe?
Topical Minoxidil has a very good safety record. The most common side effects that people experience are itching and skin irritation of the treated scalp.
Who would be a good candidate for Minoxidil?
The perfect candidates for Minoxidil use are younger men who have recently stared to notice balding in the vertex/ crown area of the scalp. As with any condition, the sooner you notice it and begin treatment, the better your chances of success.
Can hair care products (hair sprays, gels, hair dyes, etc.) be used while using Minoxidil ?
There is no evidence that the vast majority of hair care products interfere with the effectiveness of Minoxidil. Once again, make sure you speak to your doctor before using Minoxidil, and if you have any hair care products that you use regularly, mention them to your doctor to be on the safe side.
Can both men and women use Minoxidil?
Hair loss in men and hair loss in women can be treated with minoidil as part of their hair regrowth plan. Whilst there has been numerous studies showing Minoxidil causes clinically significant hair growth in both men and women, it is essential that you discuss your hair regrowth options with a doctor who specialises in this area.
